Why does the headlight become yellow and foggy?

Oxidation

Oxidation occurs when the polycarbonate lenses of modern vehicle headlights are exposed to air. When exposed to UV radiation, lenses develop tiny fractures, resulting in cloudiness.

Dirt and Chemicals

After driving for a while, a thin coating of dirt and chemicals forms on the vehicle’s headlights. This layer is opaque (cloudy), and it has the effect of dimming or making car headlights challenging to see on the road.

Water Vapor

Because of the high humidity level in the air, a vapor is formed inside the car headlight “box,” which then remains trapped within the lightbox when the air outside becomes drier. This water vapor scatters the light passing through the polycarbonate lens, causing patterns and light diffusion on the road and making it difficult to see correctly.

How do protect Headlights from yellowing and damage?

Apply paint protection film

Applying Paint Protection Film forms a barrier between the actual headlight and road debris and UV deterioration, reducing headlight damage over time.

Wash your car

Wash the headlights with automotive soap every three months to remove debris and chemicals that cause fogging.

Polish the headlights

To remove early yellowing symptoms, use a non-abrasive polishing solution and a microfiber cloth to polish your headlight lenses.

What is the process of Headlight Restoration?

Your visibility on the road will surely suffer if your headlights are cloudy or inefficient. It can lead to accidents when driving at night, in tunnels, or in bad weather. Furthermore, dim headlights make it more difficult for other drivers to see you, making you more prone to accidents. Headlight restoration may restore your headlights to like-new condition and provide you with visibility. Here are three steps of headlight restoration to preserve your headlights!

Step 1: Spray headlights

Spray the lubricant onto the polishing pad and then onto the lens. Begin rubbing the lens back and forth with pressure until the oxidation is eliminated. Make sure to lubricate both the lens and the polishing pad.

Step 2: Polish the surface

Using the second polishing pad massage the lens back and forth in the opposite direction for about 1 minute.

Flip the second pad over to the other side and rub for roughly 1 minute in the opposite direction of the prior side.

Step 3: Dry the headlight

Using a clean cloth or microfiber towel, fully dry the lens.

Take the compound and thoroughly massage it until the lens is clear.

Allow the compound to haze before buffing it with a clean towel.
